The Grafschaftslauf connects the three towns of Rietberg, Verl and Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock, which were important for the former county of Rietberg, under the motto "Experience history while running". The 28.5-kilometre route can be completed as an individual race or as a team run in a relay of three.
The start is at the Rietberg estate, where Rietberg Castle once stood. The route runs along the magnificent Schloßstraße directly into Rietberg town center and continues along the Ems to the garden show grounds. The first atmospheric nest awaits the runners in Westerwiehe; this is also where the first relay changeover takes place. The varied route then leads along country lanes past the Steinhorster Becken nature reserve to Kaunitz, where the next highlight and the second relay changeover await in the Ostwestfalenhalle. After passing the church of St. Maria Immaculata in Kaunitz, the route continues towards Liemke. In the area of the SCW Liemke club grounds and the St. Michael marksmen's club, the runners will be given another good atmosphere before the last few kilometers are quiet and contemplative through the Holter Forest, where the hunting lodge at the end of the forest provides the perfect backdrop for the finish.
