Öffentliche Stadtführung Herford: Der Friedhof zum ewigen Frieden

Guided tour/tour
Herford has many cemeteries from different eras, which are a good example of the changes in burial culture. The most recent of these is the "Zum ewigen Frieden" cemetery, which was opened a hundred years ago, on June 29, 1924. To date, around 32,000 Herford residents have been laid to rest here. Unlike the burial grounds of the Wilhelminian era, it was not intended to look like a stonemason's camp full of steles, monuments, statues and the like. Instead, the graves were to be carefully embedded in their surroundings and adapted to the given landscape. The result is a varied, park-like layout characterized by an impressive variety of trees, shrubs, other plants and birds. Due to its proximity to the forest, it is not only a cemetery, but also serves as a recreational area for the local population.

There are also memorial graves for the dead of the Second World War and the victims of Hitler's dictatorship, including forced laborers from Poland and the Soviet Union.

The meeting point is the main entrance to the cemetery (near Mindener Staße)
