First things first:
Three Oxford University students are on the lookout for marriageable young women to invite to tea. Jack has his eye on Kitty, Charley has fallen in love with Amy. They are all waiting for the rich widow Donna Lucia, who has announced her visit from Brazil and is indispensable as a chaperone for marriage plans. But when the widow announces at short notice that she cannot be in Oxford at the announced time, Jack and Charley persuade their fellow student Babbs to put on women's clothes and act as the missing Donna Lucia.
Jack's impoverished father, a retired British Army officer, is encouraged by his son to marry the rich widow from Brazil in order to pay off his debts.
But Amy's uncle and Kitty's guardian, the lawyer Spettigue, is also interested in the widow and smells big money in her.
To make matters worse, the real Donna Lucia arrives late with her niece - under a false name - and causes huge confusion as she leads everyone to believe that Babbs, who is dressed as a woman, is the real Donna Lucia.
