Medienliebe.live | Children and Social Media
Why do social media hold such a strong appeal for children and teenagers?
Neurobiologist Martin Korte points to a specific stage of brain development: Likes, videos, and constant stimuli activate the reward system, while self-control and impulse control are still maturing. But simple answers fall short. Neither bans nor turning a blind eye solve the challenges of a childhood and adolescence shaped by digital technology. What’s needed are platforms that take responsibility, as well as adults who consciously reflect on their own media use. After all, children learn not only from what they see on the screen, but also from the media habits of the people who serve as their primary caregivers.
Medienliebe.live is a collaboration between the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum and the Paderborn District Education Office.
