The new Hot

Louis Armstrong - Swing That Music

The New Hot

"the new hot" is a jazz band formed in 2022 - specializing in contemporary interpretations of Louis Armstrong's music. The unusual sound language alone makes this clear: the sousaphone is an echo of that time, while the interplay with the electric guitar makes it clear that the view of "the new hot" is not only full of benevolent nostalgia, but also curious progress. "the new hot" was socialized with Armstrong's music - guitarist Markus Fleischer took his first record with Satchmo's music to elementary school and trumpeter Marko Mebus also listened intensively to Louis Armstrong and his soundscapes in his youth. The four musicians have internalized Armstrong's nonchalance to such an extent that it has become their own. They devote themselves to the music with total dedication. It's less about form and more about attitude: they rarely resort to overly cerebral textures, but instead focus their attention on the feeling of life - exuberant, lively and expansive. "My whole life has been happiness." This quote from Louis Armstrong is set to music by "the new hot", sound for sound. In their interpretations, they give space to what stands between the notes and dedicate themselves to it with life-affirming devotion and full of energy.

The trumpet intro by Marko Mebus to "West End Blues" makes it clear what only becomes clearer as the song progresses: Mebus has studied Armstrong's solos intensively and for years, but he doesn't have to show that. Instead, he uses this background as a blueprint to develop his own creative solos. The necessary framework is provided by laid-back sounds reminiscent of rock 'n' roll and crowded dance floors.

"Swing that Music" also clearly bears the signature of "the new hot", or rather the groove: casual, laid-back breakbeat. The reason for this was the lyric "...rhythm like that puts me in a trance..." With "the new hot", this is self-explanatory.

The band brings the joie de vivre of Armstrong's music to light and shines its own contemporary spotlight on it. It shows the music of Louis Armstrong as it is and as it can be.
